Dr. Timothy S. Duerler, a Family Medicine physician, had spent time working internationally before he moved to Hawai’i. When he expressed an interest in HIV care provision, an area he had not practiced before, several clinicians encouraged him to contact Dr. Cyril Goshima of the HAETC for mentorship. LA AETC increases Routine HIV/HCV Screening in Los Angeles County by hundreds of thousands.
The LA AETC has helped scores of individual clinics increase routine HIV/HCV screening over the past 12 years since the CDC developed new routine opt-out guidelines and California changed consent laws. HAETC became directly aware of HIV in 2002, when a 35-year-old Chuukese man living in Guam returned to Chuuk. He reunited with his wife after several years trying to earn a living in Guam and resided on a very rural outer island.
Fortuitously, this was when the HAETC began training in the area. Dr. Yoster Yichiro (MO, DCHMS), and a nursing colleague, Eleanor Sos, RN of Chuuk, the Federated States of Micronesia, joined the long-term HIV training program. Arizona AETC collaborated with Banner University Medical Center and Arizona Department of Health Services to expand HIV testing in two Tucson emergency departments. When the project began in 2012, both emergency departments rarely tested patients for HIV, one had an outdated HIV testing policy requiring written consent, and both were using 3rd generation HIV antibody testing technology. Arizona AETC worked with 10+ departments to expand emergency department HIV testing and set-up a streamlined linkage to care process for patients testing positive. For the past 7 years, the LA AETC has partnered with the UCLA Department of Family Medicine to train more than 75 Spanish-speaking physicians that are part of the department’s International Medical Graduate (IMG) program. Graduates of the fellowship are working as leaders in HIV care throughout the US. Dr. Navid Roder, the first fellow, is now at the University of Pennsylvania Department of Family Medicine providing HIV leadership in the Family Medicine residency clinic. Recently he took on a HIVMA HIV fellow and will be mentoring her through the 2018-2019 academic year.
